ALBUM REVIEW – MELANIE MARTINEZ

Ever since first discovering Melanie Martinez’s early catalogue, I’ve followed her artistic journey quite closely. Her last album, “PORTALS” was released in early 2023, marking a shift in her sound from her trademark childhood-themed melodies to a more alternative pop route. I actually enjoyed this album a lot and personally consider it the best out of her first three releases. Now on March 27, 2026, Melanie has come back to release her fourth full-length record, “HADES”.
Prior to the album’s release Melanie had dropped two singles, “POSSESSION” and “DISNEY PRINCESS”. Both felt fairly reminiscent of PORTALS’ alt-pop/pop-rock style but with a lighter flair. HADES begins with “GARBAGE”, a whimsical and hypnotic track that mixes ominous instrumental plucks with unique sound effects. “GRUDGES” also stands out as an experimental, loud, and aggressive track that’ll definitely spark some discussion. Personally, I can’t say I’m a fan of talking in songs outside of poetic purposes so the song isn’t really for me, but I could see others enjoying it. “MONOPOLY MAN” may be my favorite song off the album due to Melanie’s ethereal vocals, the captivating coin clinking, and some of the most fitting and natural lyrics. “THE PLAGUE” and “THE VATICAN” see Melanie experiment with EDM, definitely sticking out production-wise, while “AVOIDANT” and “MONOLITH” showcase her ability to create a musically moving ballad.
I cannot say with confidence that the production on this album underwhelmed, there wasn’t a dull or repetitive moment throughout the track list even despite similarities between THE PLAGUE and THE VATICAN. What I can say however, is that many of the societal issues Melanie touches on feel very on the surface. I understand the dystopian concept of the record, and bringing attention to such issues is wonderful, but I can’t help but think many of the lyrics feel elementary and a tad out of touch. Whether it matches up to Melanie’s previous work is up to you, but I can only hope that her teased sister album will bring some more thoughtful lyrics.
In conclusion, I did enjoy listening to this record and can definitely tell that a lot of work went into it. I’m eager to hear what discussion will be raised from this release and how others feel about it.
