ALBUM REVIEW – A$AP ROCKY

After 8 long years, A$AP has finally dropped a new album. The 17 track, hour-long record was released Friday, the 16th of January, 2026. The lead single “Punk Rocky” came out just over a week earlier, introducing us to a newer, more low-key, casual sound. A$AP has made a name for himself as an “experimental” rapper, exploring different, unique sounds throughout his career. “Punk Rocky” is overall a pretty passive track, however it has exponentially grown on me over time and become one of my favorites.
The album opens with it’s first track, “ORDER OF PROTECTION”. This is a pretty standard opener, recognizing his awaited return to music, addressing controversies, and even mentioning ongoing beef between himself and rapper Drake. The track doesn’t have a mind-blowing hook, but it flows nicely and clearly pieces in well as a start to a very well-curated project.
The next album highlight is undoubtably it’s second single “HELICOPTER”, which was released on January 12th. The track is a standard high energy, easy listen trap song with predictable references to wealth and fame. But also dives deeper into the idea of trendsetters being overshadowed by the masses and influential neglect.
Based off of the first few listens, my ultimate favorite track has to be “STAY HERE 4 LIFE”. It’s a slower, more relaxed song about love and appreciation for where A$AP is in his life, shining through with it’s melodic and atmospheric hook. A close second would be the title track, “DON’T BE DUMB” for similar reasons. Other tracks like “AIR FORCE” and “WHISKEY” experiment with a variety of production styles to showcase A$AP’s range musically, while tracks like “ROBBERY” and “THE END” play with lyrics and atmosphere to piece together interesting or meaningful themes. While I can appreciate the experimentation on “STFU”, it doesn’t personally speak to me, and “PLAYA” still hasn’t caught on as anything remarkable.
Ultimately, it’s safe to say I really enjoyed this record, even from the first listen (which is saying something if you know me). This project has proven itself as an amazing return to music from A$AP, and shows much promise in his future.
